Proprietary Blends in Mushroom Coffee: What Labels Don't Tell You

Pick up almost any mushroom coffee or mushroom supplement on the market and flip it over. There's a good chance the "Supplement Facts" or "Other Ingredients" panel lists a single line called a proprietary blend, followed by one combined weight, then a list of five, eight, or ten mushroom species with no individual amounts at all. You can see what's in the cup. You just can't see how much of it is actually mushroom.

That single design choice, repeated across most of the category, is one of the biggest reasons two people can drink "the same kind" of mushroom coffee and have completely different experiences. Here's what a proprietary blend legally means, what independent lab analysis has found when researchers actually test these products, and what to look for instead.

What "proprietary blend" actually means, legally

A proprietary blend isn't a red flag by itself — it's a specific labeling category defined by the FDA. Under federal regulation, when a supplement label groups several dietary ingredients under a proprietary blend, the manufacturer is only required to disclose the combined total weight of the blend. The individual amount of each ingredient inside it can be withheld entirely.

Title 21 CFR 101.36(c)(3): "The quantitative amount by weight specified for the proprietary blend shall be the total weight of all other dietary ingredients contained in the proprietary blend and shall be placed on the same line to the right of the term 'Proprietary Blend.'"

In practice, that means a label can legally say "1,500mg Mushroom Blend" and list ten species, while 1,400mg of that weight is one cheap species (or a starchy growing medium — more on that below) and the other nine are present in amounts too small to do anything. There's no violation. There's also no way for a customer to tell the difference by reading the label.

Why it matters: what happens when products are actually tested

This isn't a theoretical concern. When researchers have pulled commercial mushroom supplements off shelves and analyzed them directly, the products have shown real, measurable gaps between what a label implies and what a lab finds.

A 2025 comparative analytical study of chaga supplements is a clear example. Researchers compared authentic wildcrafted chaga canker against commercial products labeled as chaga and found a fundamental compositional mismatch: authentic chaga contained 5.7–11.9% beta-glucans and under 2% alpha-glucans, while many commercial "chaga" products derived from mycelium grown on grain showed only 1.0–6.9% beta-glucans but 33–68% alpha-glucans — the starchy signature of the grain substrate itself, not the mushroom. The study also found that key chaga marker compounds (inotodiol, trametenolic acid) were completely absent from the fermented-grain products, even though the label said "chaga."

None of this required the label to lie. A proprietary blend, an ingredient list that says "mycelium," and a total weight number are all it took to obscure what was really in the jar. The Council for Responsible Nutrition, the dietary supplement industry's own trade association, has published best-practice guidance urging member companies to move away from proprietary blends for exactly this reason — because the format that protects a formula from being copied is the same format that prevents a customer from evaluating what they're buying.

How to actually read a mushroom coffee label

A few minutes of label-reading answers most of the question before you ever place an order:

Is there a milligram amount next to each mushroom, or just next to the word "blend"? If every species has its own disclosed number, you can judge the formula on its merits. If there's one number for the whole group, you're taking the amounts on faith.

Fruiting body or mycelium? The fruiting body is the mushroom itself. Mycelium-on-grain products are grown on rice, oats, or other grain and, unless the grain is filtered out, the finished powder can be mostly leftover starch — which is exactly what the chaga study above measured. Neither is inherently fraudulent, but a label should say which one you're getting.

Is it "organic," and is that certified? Mushrooms are efficient at taking up whatever is in their growing substrate, for better or worse. Certified-organic sourcing is a verifiable claim, not a marketing word.

Does the brand cite anything? A company that's comfortable naming its actual dosing is usually also comfortable pointing to the research behind each ingredient. Vague claims with no sourcing, on a label that also won't disclose amounts, is a pattern worth noticing.
