Where Cordyceps comes from
Cordyceps militaris is a bright orange fungus historically found fruiting from insect larvae in temperate and montane regions across Asia, Europe, and North America. Because wild specimens are scarce, today nearly all material destined for food and supplements is grown under controlled cultivation on grain or other substrates, where its fruiting bodies and bioactive compounds such as cordycepin can be produced consistently. What the research explores
Immune response in healthy adults (RCT)
In a randomized controlled trial in healthy adults, an eight-week Cordyceps militaris beverage containing cordycepin was associated with increased natural killer cell activity compared with placebo, while blood sugar, lipid, and safety indices did not differ between groups.
Ergogenic and recovery effects in humans (narrative review)
This narrative review of human studies reported that Cordyceps militaris supplementation may be associated with ergogenic and post-exercise recovery effects, while noting the overall certainty of evidence is limited by small samples and non-standardized preparations.
Insomnia adjuvant in depression (placebo-controlled trial)
In a six-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in patients with depression, Cordyceps militaris added to duloxetine did not improve insomnia symptoms relative to placebo, and was well tolerated with minimal adverse effects.

Researchers ran a randomized controlled clinical trial to examine how a Cordyceps militaris beverage affected the immune response in healthy adults over eight weeks. Compared with placebo, the Cordyceps militaris group showed increased natural killer cell activity, with female participants showing the greater change. Across the study, blood sugar, lipid, and safety indices did not differ between groups, and the beverage was well tolerated. The authors describe this as an observation in healthy volunteers rather than a treatment for any condition.
